Passagem neighborhood:
the historic birthplace of Cabo Frio
The Passagem neighborhood is the oldest part of Cabo Frio and holds an important part of the city's history. Its name originated during the colonial period, when the location served as a crossing point between the banks of the canal that connects the lagoon to the sea. Before the construction of the bridges, residents and travelers used small boats to make this "passage," an activity that gave the neighborhood its identity and marked its development.

During the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, the region concentrated a significant part of the city's economic and social life. Its narrow streets, colonial houses, and historical buildings reflect the influence of the Portuguese occupation and Cabo Frio's strategic role in maritime trade and salt mining. Even today, walking through the neighborhood is an opportunity to discover one of the best-preserved urban areas in the Lakes Region.
Among its main landmarks is the Church of São Benedito, built in the 18th century and considered one of the city's historical symbols. Around the church, the neighborhood maintained a tranquil atmosphere for decades, predominantly residential and linked to fishing activities.

Charm and gastronomy
In recent decades, Passagem has undergone a revitalization process that has enhanced its architectural heritage and its relationship with the Itajuru Canal. The old mansions have been restored and transformed into restaurants, cafes, bistros, and cultural spaces, attracting residents and visitors seeking fine cuisine and a charming waterfront setting.
Today, the neighborhood is recognized as the main gastronomic hub of Cabo Frio. Along its historic streets and the canal waterfront, you'll find establishments ranging from Brazilian cuisine to seafood, including Italian, Portuguese, and contemporary options. The setting combines tradition and modernity: centuries-old buildings coexist harmoniously with sophisticated restaurants and social spaces that have become meeting points for residents and tourists alike.
This transformation has made Passagem one of the most pleasant places to stroll in Cabo Frio. During the day, it stands out for its historical richness and the beauty of the canal. At night, it comes alive with the lighting of the old houses, the lively restaurants, and the welcoming atmosphere that has made the neighborhood one of the most valued and charming areas of the city.
